Presentation
In 2018, 170 years after the passing of João Allen, it is necessary to investigate and foster relations with similar contemporary international institutions, in order to frame this chapter in the history of Portuguese museums in a comparative perspective.
To this end, an International Congress will be held in Porto between 24 and 25 May 2018. We are interested in papers that reflect on the investigation on the current research concerning museums founded within the chronological arc spanning from the mid-eighteenth century to the nineteenth century the heyday of the eclectic museum.
Porto was the center of artistic and museum culture in Portugal during the first decades of the 19th century. Among the personalities that made this possible, we could distinguish the incontrovertible figure of the British-born Portuguese Citizen, John Allen (Viana do Minho, May 1, 1781-Porto, May 19, 1848). With a cosmopolitan upbringing, Allen was also an indefatigable traveler and an eclectic collector. In 1836, he would open the Allen Museum in Porto, the first Portuguese museum endowed with a purpose-built edifice commissioned by a private individual to house his collections and to display them to public benefit.
